LASIK FOR PEOPLE OVER AGE 40

Nearsighted people over age 40 whom are accustomed to removing their eyeglasses for close work need to give extra thought to vision correction surgery. If they have LASIK to focus distant objects clearly, they will probably need glasses to read at near. This is a totally new situation for them. For some, this may be an advantage but for others, it may not.

It is possible to correct one eye for distance and leave the other slightly nearsighted for reading. This technique called monovision may give people over age 40 the best chance of eliminating all corrective eyewear. Many contact lens wearers employ this technique to avoid wearing reading glasses over their lenses. Monovision can also be done for farsighted people. One eye can be corrected for good distance vision and the other corrected for good near vision.

If you have successfully worn monovision contact lenses, monovision LASIK will probably be a good option for you. If you don't wear contact lenses but are interested in monovision, we recommend a free trial of monovision contact lenses before you have LASIK to help you determine if this will work for you.
